The Weserantikorrekturprojekt takes as a starting point the history of large scale water engineering project known as the Korrektions der Unterwesser (Correction of the Lower Weser), and puts into question what was intended with the term “river correction”. At the end of the 18th century, the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen embarked on the resolution of straightening part of the lower Weser, with the intention of allowing larger merchant ships to arrive in Bremen. This gives a glimpse to the still ongoing troubled relations between colonialism, territory, bodies of water and maritime trade, in the context of Western-capitalist societies.
The work is part of my PhD research and takes the format of sculptures, video installations and performances. There were several activations of the installation during the opening and further activations during the next few days.
